Several things: Fungus loves to grow in a dark moist environment, which is a shoe and sock. You could have decreased blood circulation so can't fight off fungus.

Why fungus?: Fungus is everywhere in the environment. If it enters an area where fungus can reproduce (dark, moist, warm) then it can start to grow. Keeping your feet dry and seekin care at the first sign of any nail chages is your best chance to prevent it.
