Many: Most of the time the pain is not due to the spur but from plantar fasciitis. You can try stretching, ice, orthotics, rest, physical therapy. If the spur is the true cause then it may be necessary for surgery to either remove the spur or just release the plantar fascia.

Arch supports: Heel pain, often described as heel spurs or heel spur syndrome is rarely the result of the spur, but instead mechanical overloading and inflammation of the attachment of the plantar fascia to the heel bone. This usually responds well to arch supports, antiinflammatories, injections and stretching. Also frequently due to worn shoes so go ahead and replace with good quality supportive athletic shoes.
