A member asked:

Is there a difference in taking name brand synthroid (thyroxine) & generic?

Yes: The fda allows for a 5% variance in brand name medications but a larger variance in generic "equivalents." synthroid and levothyroxine are not considered equivalents and thus not interchangeable. Therefore, stick with one; if you have started on synthroid stay with it, if you have started on levothyroxine stay with it.

Generic: Levothyroxine is less reliable than the brand name products. The dose and your body's response to it can vary from pill to pill and batch to batch. If your pharmacy changes from one manufacturer to another, your levels will change. Brand names are more expensive, but highly recommended.
