Is it possible to tell the difference between a muscle strain or something in the chest and lung pain/inflammation?

Oftentimes no: Symptoms related to strain in the chest muscles and inflammation in the linings of the lungs/pleurisy are similar and over-lapping. Both will present with pain on deep breathing. One distinct difference is that the former will elicit pain when you apply pressure on the chest wall while the latter won't. Chest pain related to heart condition usually occurs in older folks with risk factors.
