Discomfort = Surgery: If a link between stones in a gallbladder and symptoms such as pain or "discomfort" is convincing, then it does not make sense to ignore the cause. Although no one "wants" surgery, the best question to ask is whether it is better to have a planned (elective), controlled procedure, or to subsequently have an urgent, less optimized operation when you have become sick? Discuss honestly with your md.

Yes: Unless the risk of the operation is too high, the best time to remove your gallbladder is between attacks. Don't wait until you get sick. A 1" stone will not go away on its own.
