Depends on the site : Some tooth infections that require root canal treatment may respond favorably to amoxicillin. Various gum line infections may respond to tetracycline derivatives. But antibiotics do not treat the cause of the infection, you must see your dentist who will diagnose your problem and perform the appropriate treatment. Plus you must not be allergic to the medication.

Usually penicillin: However, your dentist may prescribe something different depending upon your tooth's condition and your health.

Amoxicillin: Amoxicillin is the most commonly prescribed antibiotic, but the one that is chosen depends on the patient's allergies, what the dentist suspects is causing the infection and what the patient has previously taken.

Infected tooth: Best antibiotic is the one that works, isn't expensive, doesn't have major side effects. Amoxicillin is often the one used; if allergic to penicillins, Erythromycin may be used. If bone may be involved, Clindamycin is chosen. Let dentist select based on his exam findings. Best treatment is prevention: daily brushing, flossing, rinsing. Dental visit 6-12 months.
