Options: There are many way to check the thyroid from physical exam to lab work to ultrasound. Lab testing is the best way to know if the thyroid is working, and ultrasound is the best way to know what the thyroid looks like.

Thyroid: Function is best checked with tsh, ft4, and ft3. Autoimmunity can be checked with anti-TPO antibodies. Structure can be checked with ultrasound and physical exam.
