Mri: In adult, bakers cyst is usually associated with some form of abnormality in the knee joint itself. So an mri is usually obtained to rule out problems in the knee itself such as a meniscal tear.

Depends on cause: Treatment depends on what is causing the cyst in the first place. Usually getting at the cause will allow the cyst to regress. Also, sometimes drainage by an interventional radiologist will be helpful if cyst really big. I have a bad knee after being hit by a drunk driver 40 years ago, and had bad arthritis in the knee. They drained the cyst...but eventually I had to have knee replacement surgery

Baker's cyst: A Baker's cyst is a fluid filled collection in the posterior aspect of the knee secondary to normal joint fluid escaping the knee compartment. This is often associated with a meniscus tear and degenerative joint pathology (arthritis). They may resolve spontaneously, but can recur. Draining the cyst is a temporary treatment as the fluid will likely re-accumulate.
