A member asked:

What causes lung failure during a emergency laparomoty surgery?

Inflammatory cells: When someone has emergency exploratory laparotomy it is usually for an abdominal catastrophe like a bowel perforation and the patient is extremely sick or septic. The inflamatory cells that are supposed to fight infection release chemicals to help fight the infection but these inflammatory mediators can cause pulmonary edema and lowbloodpressure, and eventually respiratory failure.

Breathing failure?: If you mean breathing failure it could be laryngospasm, failed intubation, fluid overload, sedation overdose, medication reaction, medacation or other allergy. Inlfamatory cells would be much more rare.

Many reasons: It depends on the patient's health and the cause of emergency. Severe infection may require more breathing than can be done without a machine. Injury or heart failure can cause fluid in the lungs. Plus there are rare reactions to medications. There are usually many intertwined reasons in a patient requiring an emergency laparotomy.
