Hard to tell: Sometimes hard to tell. If a bulge is present you probably have a hernia. If not, it could be either.

Hernia is a bulge: A hernia often has a bulge where a pulled muscle will just have pain. Hernias have pain often because they also cause the muscle and the fascia to "pull." if you have a bulge in the area, and it can be massaged back into place - you have a hernia and should see a surgeon. Otherwise, ice and advil (ibuprofen) should do the trick. Good luck and happy new year.
