Good question!: Acne causes inflammatory (and sometimes infected) cysts; if the surrounding tissues are damaged (enough) by squeezing or more severe infection, scars can result. Even if scars are not caused, inflammation can cause skin pigment cells (melanocytes) to be stimulated, making the surrounding skin darker. This post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can leave blotches and discolorations even without scars.

Color: Acne scars are depressed scars, causing abnormal contour of the skin. The color of the scar can be identical to skin color. Acne pigmentation is an inflammatory change in the skin, causing dark pink or light brown pigment changes in the skin color.
