Not clear: The appearance of a monoclonal protein (monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance - mgus) in patients with chronic itp is of unclear association. In one series of 228 consecutive patients with mgus, 6 were found to have itp (immune thrombocytopenia). There may be an autoimmune component expressed in these patients but certainly is not a common association.
