See GI doctor: If a barium swallow or upper GI test shows an area of narrowing in the esophagus, it can be due to many causes. It may first be necessary to do more tests to be sure there is nothing more serious going on. A gastroenterologist may need to "scope" you with a special camera to see what is going on inside your esophagus. The treatment depends on the cause and how symptomatic you are.
