I am confused as to why some people are given multiple antipsychotics to take together. what is the point?

Great Question: In general, doctors try to avoid "polypharmacy" http://en.Wikipedia.Org/wiki/polypharmacy however, sometimes it is indicated. See examples given in wiki article. Another example: i can see prescribing one anti-psychotic for primary control of symptoms and another sedating anti-psychotic for insomnia/calming i.e. Seroquel (quetiapine) for sleep. In genl tho': avoid polypharmacy.
