A member asked:

Is it possible to have permanent hearing loss due to an ear infection?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

It depends....: The usual ear infections, otitis media (fluid or infection in the middle ear) and otitis externa (swimmer's ear) can cause hearing loss during the infection, but hearing returns to normal after the infection resolves. A viral infection of the inner ear, on the other hand, can sometimes result in a permanent hearing loss. Check with your ENT doctor to see what you have.
