Enlarged thyroid: A goiter is a term for an enlarged thyroid gland. Sometimes the thyroid is large enough that it is visible as a butterfly shaped swelling in the neck; more commonly the enlargement can only be appreciated on examination by a physician skilled in the evaluation of the thyroid.

Phys exam: A good internist or an endocrinologist should be able to feel if you have a goiter (enlarged thyroid) on a physical examination. One could also get a thyroid ultrasound to more carefully look at the thyroid to see if there are nodules that are causing the enlargement.
