Maybe: Herpes simplex virus infection usualy looks like pimples with a red base and is itchy. This sounds more like folliculitis (infection around hair follicles). Do you shave? Is this irritation from shaving? Try not shaving, wearing boxer-style underwear, avoid lotions. If redness spreads this could be a worsening infection and a provider needs to look at it soon.
