A member asked:

What does ejection fraction means? i'm having a hida scan tomorrow because i'v been diagnosed w/a gallbladder sludge

Ejection fraction is: A measure of how effectively the gallbladder releases bile when it contracts. During a hida scan, the gallbladder accumulates the radioactive substance. Another medication is then given (cck) which stimulates the gallbladder to contract. A special camera measures how well the gallbladder empties. This is reported as a percentage. If abnormal, this may be a source of pain without gallstones.

How well it empties: The ejection fraction measures how well your gallbladder empties. Stones and sludge can cause blockages and the test can help diagnose this. Sludge is really like super tiny stones and can or may not cause blockages. Many people have sludge and have no symptoms and therefore no need for treatment.

Gallblad. contractio: The ejection fraction of a gallbladder is a measurement of its contraction. With a computer, the number of counts in the gallbladder is calculated before and after medication such as cck or fatty meal. A normal gallbladder ejection fraction is more then 40%, meaning that more than 40% of the gallbladder content is ejected out of the gallbladder following its contraction.

Sludge: Gall bladder sludge is seen on ultrasound exam. The nuclear medicine nuclear scan relates how well gall bladder is functioning by how well gb contracts. Sludge in gall bladder can have either normal or abnormal study. The scan also demonstrate relative function of liver and abnormalities in common bile duct. In adults most clinicians use above 35% as normal gb ejectin value.
