Could my ingrown toenail have any connection to a bone infection?

Yes: An ingrown toenail initially starts as an infection of the soft tissue, but if left untreated it can spread and penetrate into the bone and cause a bone infection which is also known as osteomyelitis. This is a nasty infection and can lead to amputation of the affected toe. If you have an ingrown toenail, see a podiatrist asap.

Possibly: Is the bone infection close to the nail area? If so, then it may be associated. Mainly I have only seen an associated bone infection related to an ingrown toenail in diabetic patients, but only rarely. Any bacterial infection , however, should be treated urgently by a doctor. If a bone infection is suspected, an x-ray/mri?Bone scan may be ordered.

Yes.: Leaving an ingrown nail untreated could lead to the development of an abscess and possible underlying bone infection. Get it taken care of by a professional to avoid preventable complications.

Yes: I agree with dr. Rafat. If you have diabetes or bad circulation your chances are even better for having an abscess and subsequent bone infection.
