Chemotherapy.: AML is a very aggressive form of leukemia. Treatment starts with intensive chemo in hospital, usually 3-4 weeks. Once in remission, additional treatment (chemo. Vs stem cell transplant) is given, so it takes a number of months to get through it. Chance of cure depends on a number of factors, such as age, type of dna damage that caused the leukemia, initial white count and subtype of aml.
