Variable: Allergic contact dermatitis rash (poison ivy) can take several weeks to resolve. Rashes related to medication allergy generally improve within 48 hours of stopping the medication. Hives can wax/wane for days, weeks, months or even years. Hives can come and go within hours. If a person has continued exposure to an allergen, the rash is likely to persist.
