A long time: The bald patches vary from day to day and month to month and in different areas of the tongue. Generally it lasts years and may never fully go away. The good news is that it is benign and harmless without any need to treat. Some patients may experience sensitivity to spicy or other foods and then need to limit those foods accordingly.

Unknown: The good thing about geographic tongue is that it is completely harmless. Unfortunately there is no treatment for it. It will resolve spontaneously, but this may take months to years. Avoid irritating foods such as pineapple or citrus fruits.
