Variable: The condition usually waxes and wanes in severity, with the red patches appearing in one area for a number of days, persisting in general with numerous areas for a period of time, lasting from days to weeks to months, depending on the individual, and then clearing up. However, the process usually repeats itself in a different area or areas after a few more days, weeks, months or even years.

Years: The degree of geographic tongue episodes will vary over your lifetime but it does not go away completely. It is usually more severe when younger. Stress, hormonal changes, etc, seem to make it worse.
