May never know!: We may never know why you were born with a small split on the tip of your tongue. If you have always had it and it hasn't changed or gotten worse and is not painful or ulcerated, i would just have your dentist keep an eye on it. Does anyone else in your family share a similar condition?

Sporadic event: The front 2/3 of the tongue is formed from 2 lateral swellings in the floor of the developing mouth around 4 weeks into fetal life. The lateral swellings grow toward each other & join from back to front. Incomplete joining leaves a variable cleft.A similar process causes a cleft lip or palate. Most are sporatic with slight genetic influence. It is occasionally seen with named syndromes.
