Anesthesia problems: Side effects depend on the type of anesthesia, the length and type of surgery, the age and gender of the patient, and other medical conditions that patients have at the time of surgery. With general anesthesia, people sometimes have nausea, sore throat, hoarse voice and muscle aches. Spinal blocks have a low risk of headache. Nerve blocks have a rare risk of nerve injury or infection.
