Excellent record: This is an excellent record for the surgeon, who is very experienced. Overall risk of stroke with this surgery is 1% or so. It is possible to make a complete recovery from a stroke, but better not to have one in the first place. At your age, you may also qualify to have your carotid blockage treated with a stent which is a less invasive procedure with an easier recovery.

Possible: He has a good experience. Usual series: death about 1-2% stroke about 2-4% partial or complete recovery is possible. Recovery may be more common after surgery than after a spontaneous stroke.

Pretty good: That's a pretty great track record. I think even the best carotid surgeons can expect a 1% risk of stroke. Some strokes are totally out of the hand of the surgeon. But maybe he's the best of the best! Always worthwhile to get a second opinion if you have doubts. If the second opinion agrees the indications are good, go back to your surgeon. Gee, maybe I'll go to him too!
