I have just been diagnosed with gallstones, following acouple of painful episodes i have an egg shaped swelling on my right side. could this related?

Not likely: Unless you are very skinny, it is not likely you will feel your gb as described. You may have a small hernia of the muscles in the abdominal wall, which can bulge as you say. Particularly if it is painful, should get evaluation by surgeon (/urgent care / er).
