HPV: Almost all cervical cancer is caused by a few specific types of hpv (human papilloma virus). Infection with the cancer-causing types of hpv can be prevented by vaccination with either Cervarix or Gardasil and can be detected with a screening exam called a pap smear. Only a small number of women who get the virus will get cancer and a number of other factors, liking smoking, increase that risk.
