Smelly, not germy: Good question! farts are "the gas we pass, " like the name of the great kids' book. Since it's not full of germs, it's not contagious like a cough.

Unlikely, but...: A fart (passing gas) is a type of air going out the rectum and containing tiny airborne droplets or particles of material from the rectum and anus, more likely when the "farter" has diarrhea or passes gas at a "high airspeed". They should not be infectious if the gas passes through 2-3 layers of clothing, but it is possible to pass infectious stool germs if farting is during oral sexual activity.
