Hives: They have multiple causes, most of them are mysterious. It may be you had a slight viral infection, sometimes hormonal changes can also trigger them, but usually they are benign. Shingles leave a long last painful rash, it is different.

Hives: Shingles don't present as hives. Shingles can cause fairly dramatic pain followed within a few days by rash. It usually appears in a particular location on 1 side of the body. The rash burns intensely, itches & is made up blisters that open up & crust over. A person could also have fever, chills, headache & generalized aches & pains with fatigue.
