Gout relief: Rest, elevation, ice anti-inflammatories are helpful. As far as medications, Colchicine is used but recently got very$$. Occasionally steroid pills are used for severe cases as are pain pills occasionally... Best treatment is prevention!

NSAIDs et. al.: Acute gout should be treated with either non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, steroids or colchicine. Chronic gout combines the treatments for acute gout to control the pain as well as other medications to remove the uric acid from your system to help prevent attacks and reveres any joint damage.

Medication: Though gout attacks are usually self-limited (ie, lasting 7-14 days) they can be disabling. Medications including nsaids, steroids, and Colchicine can bring relief. The third of these options is usually optimal due to its excellent side effects profile and rapid onset of action. This drug has, unfortunately, recently become expensive (no longer a generic available), and is only available via rx.

Gout Treatment: Gout is treated by first relieving acute flairs with one of several choices. The next step is lowering serum uric acid which is the cause of gout. Long term treatment includes avoiding alcohol, foods high in purine, and certain medications known to increase uric acid (or block the bodies ability to eliminate uric acid). This is usually accompanied by medication to lower uric acid.
