Is hirsutism dangerous?

13 doctors weighed in across 8 answers

Not by itself: Hirsuitism is not dangerous, but you may want to ask your doctor why. For example, a hormonal or thyroid problem may need treatment. Pcos (polycystic ovarian syndrome) is another example - the hirsuitism it can cause is not in itself dangerous, but associated findings like weight gain and high sugars are. Ask your doctor; they may choose to run some tests to be sure.

Hirsuitism: Excessive hair in a woman usually indicates a hormonal imabalance. The question is what is producing the excessive hormones and that should be worked up by an endocrinologist. Certain glands can be overactive or the organs may be more sensitiive to the hormones or there can be tumors, benign and malignant that secrete hormones. Please see a doctor that will evaluate your condition.

Hirsutism: Some causes can be. These would include tumors of the ovary, or adrenal glands. Cystic ovaries can rupture and lead to infertility. Luckily all of these are pretty rare to occur.

Very rarely: The #1 cause of excess hair growth in women is polycystic ovarian syndrome (pcos) which affects 8-10%. We diagnose pcos with an ultrasound scan & blood tests, looking for adrenal gland problems or other causes. Hormone-producing tumors causing hirsutism are incredibly rare. Pcos can pose some long-term risks if untreated like a higher chance of diabetes; rarely uterine cancer if few periods a year.

Depends on the cause: If the hirsutism is caused by an adrenal mass, then it's more dangerous. If it's caused by polycystic ovarian syndrome, then it will impact your life but not necessarily kill you. The most important thing is to find out the cause of the hirsutism.
