What can cause unexplained pain in my ankle and achilles' tendon?

Many things: The pain you are experiencing may or may not be connected. Ankle pain can result from arthritis, infections, sprain/strains. Achilles tendon pain may result from tendonitis, tears in the tendon, bone spurs amongst other things. Evaluation by a podiatrist or foot/ankle orthopedic surgeon would be beneficial.
