Usually 1st session: A physician, doctoral level clinical psychologist, psychiatrist or psychotherapist who is also a diagnostician can usually diagnose depression during a diagnostic interview. However, it may take longer to determine if there is bipolar spectrum disorder or cocurrent mental health or substance use disorders.
