Yes: Inflammation can mask many things. However, short of surgery, there is not a lot that can be done to see the extent of the injury. You could ask your doctor if they think an MRI arthrogram may help. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjegd1qxabm.

Get XRay: You should make sure to get an xray. An entitity konwn as calcific tendonitis/burisitis can be very difficult to diagnose on mri. Otherwise, you could have a labral tear for which you would need a mr arthogram and not just a normal mr of the shoulder. See a sports doc to tease these things out.
