IT DEPENDS: Not all diseased gallbladders have stones. About 10% of gallbladders removed, due to symptoms , have no stones. They just fail to empty appropriately, leading to pain, bloating, increased gas, and nausea. A functional test (hida scan) of the gallbladder can be ordered, and if the gallbladder is not emptying appropriately, removal will usually improve symptoms. Good luck.
