You Bet!: None of our muscle cells contract (heart muscle only exception) without a nerve impulse telling them to contract. Thus internal control dominant; intestinal muscle motion totally under nervous system control (subconscious) 24/7. Thus biggest driver intestinal upset is emotional upset expressed into intestines for whatever basis, e.g. “nerves”/nausea before test as child/teen; reaction to food, etc.
