Take pain reliever.: These often develop minor infection. Sometimes pus will collect along the border of the nail and will need to be released with a puncture. If you get progressive pain up your finger with red streaking you will need to see someone for antibiotics, but this does not usually happen.

Warm soaks: Tearing of a hangnail can create an area where the normal bacteria around your nail can start an infection. Initial treatment should be warm soaks for 20-30 min. Three times a day. Keep covered with bandaide. I don't recommend ointments. If this does not help then you may need to call your doctor to get some antibiotic pills.
