Varies: I would give it at least 4 - 5 days. Very easy to dislodge up to this time. I would also be careful, even at this time, until you get good tissue growth around the socket.

24 hours: I normally tell my pt. The first 24 hrs are critical to keep clot in socket. No rinsing, spitting, swishing, sucking thru straw, smoking, and drinking hot liquids for 24 hrs. Avoid using that side. This gives time for the healing to start. You need to be careful but can function close to normal. Gums and bone take some time to heal and close.
