Change in function: Depression is diagnosed on the basis of specific signs & symptoms, starting with persistent low or irritable mood, marked changes in sleep and appetite (increased or decreased), fatigue, and maybe thoughts of self-harm. If you have several such symptoms, start with your physician to see if there's a physical cause or if you'd benefit from an assessment for depression. It's highly treatable!
