A member asked:

When tracking blood pressure, is the "mean" value the important part? i usually have a high systolic and low diastolic like 134/68 and heart rate 48.

Low heart rate: Your blood pressure seems fine but your heart rate of 48 may signal a heart problem as it is too low. Call your doctor for an appointment to discuss your low heart rate etc.

Mostly systolic: The systolic pressure (upper number) is best understood in terms of what is normal and the relationship between BP and risk of stroke and heart disease. The diastolic pressure (lower number) seems to vary a lot depending on how the BP is measured (with a stethoscope or with an electronic BP cuff). The mean BP is rarely used outside the intensive care unit or the operating room.

Not so simple: Hypertension can be systolic, diastolic or both. For systolic 120 or less is normal, 120 - 139 pre hypertension, greater than 140 hypertension. For diastolic normal less than 79, 80 - 89 pre hypertension, 90 or greater is hypertension.
