Ice after activity..: Continue to ice down after your sporting activities. Remember that you should start slow and build up to where you were during exercise. To rapid an attempt to exercise at your previous intensity risks aggravating your injury.

Both.: Use heat to loosen up the knee joint prior to strenuous activity, then ice afterwards to cool the knee down.
