Scarring: Arthrofibrosis is a diffuse or occasionally localized scarring process that limits the flexion and/or extension of the knee when attempting normal movement. There are multiple causes. A plica is a localized tissue band that may limit motion unrelated to scarring.

Scar tissue: Arthro means joint and fibrosis is basically scar tissue or thickening of collagen. Arthrofibrosis is basically when the scar tissue bands, scar tissue, or thickened collagen surround the joint keeping it from moving. If stretching doesn't work , surgery to release and debride scar tissue can be attempted. Unfortunately, it can sometimes reccur.
