Have him see MD!!!!: While there are certainly benign things that can cause this such as an inflammed tonsil, there are enough less benign things that can cause this that he absolutely needs to be seen by a doctor. A doctor can examine the throat, order a chest x-ray to check the lungs and any relevant blood tests. Help him schedule appointment if need be!

Hemoptyais: Hemoptysis always tells you you need to seek medical attention. Conditions like pneumonia, tuberculosis, foreign body, or bronchioectasis can trigger blood in the cough.

Seek medical help: Coughing up blood, known as hemoptysis, is never normal and should be evaluated immediately. There are many different reasons that this can happen, but a physician should be consulted to discuss the evaluation and treatment.
