Hard to tell : Without a radiograph (x-ray) and a visual examination. There are a variety of dental problems that can make chewing painful. These include, but are not limited to, decay, traumatic injury, poor occlusion (bite), harmful habits (ie. Biting pens, finger nails), a history of clenching or grinding your teeth, just to mention a few. See your dentist for a thorough evaluation and treatment.
