Which symptoms develop when you have a cataract in your eye?

Visual Acuity Loss: Cataracts are (usually) age-related opacification of the lens of the eye. As a cataract becomes more opaque, vision is compromised and a loss of visual acuity is noted. Contrast sensitivity is lost, so that contours, shadows and color vision are less vivid. They also cause a darkening of the red-reflex, which normally makes the eye appear red under light (like in a picture taken with the flash on).

Worsening vision: Cataracts most often cause a decline in the vision generally. Specifically, though, cataracts cause difficulty seeing small things at near or in the distance, make it so you need more light to see what you're reading and cause difficulty functioning in glare conditions such as bright headlights at night or sunlight during the day.

Glare from headlight: Glare from oncoming car headlights is generally the first symptom. Everyone can be annoyed from xenon or bright blue headlights coming toward you on a rainy night but this glare from developing cataract changes in the lens of your eye make driving uncomfortably dangerous. In fact a driving simulated glare test is offered at many ophthalmology offices to test glare disability before surgery.
