How recent was it?: The mouth is a very sensitive area and it doesn't take much difference in size, shape and texture to notice these differences with new dental prostheses. Everything usually feels magnified. Feeling this for a few hours or even a day or so is common. Anything longer than that and you should see your dentist for an evaluation to see what is going on and if there is anything that can be done.

Could be.: If the bridge is new you may notice tightness where the pontics sit on the gums. You may also feel tight where the contact is present. Rather, where the crown touches the tooth next to it. You should be able to floss both in front of and behind the bridge. As well as under with a theader. If swelling continues you should see your dentist or if you are unable to floss.

No: Tightness may be normal but not swelling. Go back to your dentist to have the cause of the swelling evaluated.

Too tight: A new bridge may feel that way for a day or so, but prolonged tightness may indicate the bridge does not fit well enough. Have your dentist eval it and if they are not helpful, get a second opinion.

How long?: Some new crowns and bridges feel "tight" for the first day or so, but that feeling should dissipate. If it doesn't, tell your dentist.

No: Make sure you are flossing after each meal and make sure you are flossing under the bridge with a floss threader or superfloss. Swelling can occur if you are not flossing or not enough. Have your dentist check the fit and go over home care with you.

Not normal: Observe for a few days. If it doesn't improve, please see a prosthodontist.

Normal in beguining: A perfect bridge should feels as you do not have anything new in the mouth after 4 days ( aprox), and it should be easy to clean and esthetic. A lttle of discomfort in the beguining it is ok.

Tight bridge: Wait a few days, a week at most. If it does not improve and the swelling continues, you may need to have it adjusted (if accesible). If that does not help, you may need to replace it.
