Many ways.: It can lead to confusion and lack of touch with reality. It is often accompanied by impairment in the areas of interpersonal relationships, recreation and work. In some cases it may lead to harm to self or others or one's inability to care for his or her self.

We all depend...: ...On seeing our world accurately and responding in accord with it. To a degree we are all less than perfect in this. In psychosis, the distortion is severe, and severe distortions can lead to severely mismatched responses. For example, if we believe incorrectly that someone is trying to harm us, we will either flee or fight. If we believe that dangerous actions are safe, we can harm ourselves.
