A member asked:

Is a blood test very effective in diagnosing hsv1 and 2?

Only if recurrent: If it is the first time, the blood test is not positive until 2-4 weeks, after that it is pos for many years. Usually it is easy to recognize by an experienced dr. A culture can confirm & differentiate type 1 or 2. Creams are a waste of $$$. The pills are very useful if started on the first day.

Depends : There is a blod test that will determine if you have antibodies, but many people have antibiodies that never have outbreaks. The best test is from a sore or lesion itself. See your doctor if you have any sores or to talk about your concerns.
