Different parents: The only way to have prevented it would be to have been born from different parents with different genetic predispositions. Check w/your dermatologist, but other than rogaine (minoxidil) or propecia, there is probably nothing that can be done.

Avoid hair dryers, permanents or curling irons. Consider use of a wide toothed comb. Consider acupuncture.
